When you picture yourself in bed, let's face it, you probably picture freshly cleaned sheets, pillows, and duvet – right?
But what about your mattress? Can you think of the last time you gave that thing a good clean? If you're scratching your head – best get onto that as soon as you can! You'll really enjoy your snoozes knowing you're in a refreshing, clean bed.
A regular deep clean is always a good idea as we want our mattresses to last as long as possible and stay hygienically clean and fresh. Before calling in the professionals, there are some tips you can do at home to keep your mattress clean and fresh between deep professional cleans.
This is especially important if you get any spills or stains on your sheets, as it can prevent the stains from setting further. Don't forget to also wash your pillowcases, blankets, sheets, mattress protectors, and any lining!
Your mattress is prone to dust and essentially dust mites! Remove any lingering dust and debris that may have found their way under your sheets. Make sure to use the upholstery brush attachment on your vacuum, as other attachments may snag or damage the mattress.
Using a clean, dry cloth or sponge, absorb as much of the spilled liquid as possible by gently dabbing it, rather than scrubbing, to prevent the spill from spreading. Then, moisten the cloth or sponge with cold water and gently blot the affected area to remove any remaining residue.
If you're dealing with stubborn or older stains on your mattress, there are a few ways to tackle the issue. One option is to use a store-bought stain remover that is suitable for use on mattresses; just be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
Alternatively, you can create a homemade solution by mixing regular dishwashing liquid and warm water. Apply this mixture to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before gently rubbing it with a clean cloth. Once finished, allow the area to dry completely.
For more challenging stains, you can try making a paste with water and baking soda and applying it directly to the affected area. Allow it to sit for around 30 minutes before dabbing the area with a clean cloth. You may need to repeat this process a few times for particularly stubborn stains.
To remove any odours from your mattress use plain baking soda. Sprinkle a light layer of baking soda onto your mattress and leave it for an hour or so. Once again, don't forget to vacuum your mattress when done to clean up!
